IKEA's Akurum / Faktum Kitchen System : It's Totally Component! PDF print email

The Akurum Kitchen System (and it's European counterpart, Faktum) is truly genius.  Find out more about what sets this system apart from the stock cabinets you'll find in home centers.

There are often questions and misunderstandings about the Akurum Kitchen System. The Akurum system is a component system. Each cabinet is made up of various parts that can be ordered separately, or not at all, depending on your particular needs. For example, all 36" base cabinets are variations on the 36" box. On the following page, you'll see all the standard variations on a 36" base cabinet.

36" Sink Base (SBD36): 36" box, legs, hinges, 2 18"x24" doors, false front hardware
36" Domsjo Sink Base(SBD36D): 36" box, legs, hinges, 2 18"x24" doors - the hardware for installing the sink comes with the sink
36" Base Cabinet with 2 doors, 2 drawers (BD36):36" box, legs, hinges, 2 18"x24" doors, 2 18" shallow drawer fronts, 1 drawer partition, 2 18" shallow drawer boxes, 2 shelves
36" Base Cabinet with 2 doors (B36):36" box, legs, hinges, 2 18"x30" doors, 2 shelves
36" Base Cabinet with 4 drawers (B4D36): 36" box, legs, 2 18" shallow drawer fronts, 1 drawer partition, 2 18" shallow drawer boxes + 2 36" deep drawer fronts - (I believe these come packed together) 2 36" deep drawer boxes
36" Cooktop Cabinet with 4 drawers (CTD36):36" box, legs, 2 18" shallow drawer fronts, 1 drawer partition, 2 18" shallow drawer boxes + 2 36" deep drawer fronts - (I believe these come packed together) 2 36" deep drawer boxes
36" Cooktop Cabinet with 2 doors, 2 drawers (CTD36):36" box, legs, hinges, 2 18"x24" doors, 2 18" shallow drawer fronts, false front hardware, 2 shelves
You could also do other variations if you'd like...say a 36" base oven cabinet (36" box, legs, 30"x40" oven panel). If you can imagine it, you can probably do it. All of the above cabinets are the same basic thing...just different parts. The cabinet box is exactly the same.

If you're doing a modification like PollyQ's or DulcineaK's genius sink base modifications, you'd just order what you need:
For PollyQ's: Give me a 36" box, legs, 2 18"x30" doors, 2 18" deep drawer boxes, 1 drawer partition. No shelves or hinges, please.

For DulcineaK's: Give me a 36" box, legs, hinges, 2 18"x24" doors, 2 18" shallow drawer boxes, 1 drawer partition and a pack of shelves. No false front hardware, please.

You only pay for what you need. The system is completely component based (with a few exceptions, namely some of the drawer sets and the horizontal cabinets which come with hinges), and very flexible as evidenced by the ease with which modifications are made.

Instead of purchasing an entire cabinet including parts you don't need and risking the chance that you'll lose your receipt or fail to return within the 45 day limit, just DON'T BUY THEM. Tell your IKEAn what you need, then double check your draft order. Don't pay for things you don't need.

Your imagination is the limit! Be bold!
