Modifying a sink base for non-IKEA apron-front farm sink

We modified a 36" IKEA sink base to hold an undermounted 36" Whitehaus Quatro Alcove fireclay farm sink.

This particular sink is 36" x 20" x 10" and weighs about 100 lbs. I intended to get the Domsjo sink base, but purchased the regular sink base instead, and it really made no difference in the end.

Because the sink is wider at the top than it is at the bottom, as an undermount, the only way it would fit into the 36" base was if the sides of the cabinet were cut down.

Thank you, Susan! Yes, it is Waterlox Original Sealer and Finish. We had been doing the mineral oil treatment for several months, and it was just too much upkeep and never really gave us the look we wanted. We don't cut on the counters, so Waterlox seemed the perfect choice. I love it!

Re: Modifying a sink base for non-IKEA apron-front farm sink

Hi Jen,
Looks beautiful! Do you have finished pictures of your kitchen? I am also interested in putting an apron-front farm sink in my ikea kitchen (we haven't installed yet- right now my kitchen is gutted & they're doing the plumbing & electric). My question for you, do you think a 30"x18" rohl "shaw's original" would work in the 36" base? My husband really wants this brand of sink & the next size up is 36" but according to what I've found, it requires a 39" sink base cabinet.
Sorry for the long post, I'm new to writing on these boards... Thank you in advance!
Sara

Re: Modifying a sink base for non-IKEA apron-front farm sink

I just got a new stainless steel apron sink. Does anyone know the proper amount of space it should stick out from the cabinet front? I believe there is a piece of steel from the front that wraps around to the bottom and then ends. I'm guessing I probably don't want to go out further than that.

I plan to undermount the remaining three sides. Also curious to know what type of lip everyone is leaving (ie what amount of stainless is viewable on the other three sides). I've seen them almost flush, but was thinking that would limit most the over-the-sink baskets and strainers and cutting boards I've seen. Without a lip they wouldn't be level. Hope that makes sense.
