Retailers are telling us that we need to have a selfcleaning wall oven if we are going to install it in a cabinet under a cooktop - apparently there may be some problems with a manual clean because it is not insulated??
Has anyone run into this?
Also, does anyone know if Ikea uses heat resistant veneer (able to withstand 300F without warping, melting, etc.)?
We don't get it either and have since had several other retailers tell us it doesn't matter. Another forum I checked did say something about it voiding the warranty of the cooktop. Maybe it has something to do with the remote possibility of the heat of the oven damaging the underside of the cooktop???
My cynical side says that they just want to sell us a more expensive oven.
This one has been a real puzzle, no one seems to know the answer.
First, some wall ovens are too tall to fit under a cooktop. It is very important to know how much height you have available before buying. I have read that some take the bottom out of the cabinet to gain more space. F
Further, a 30" wall oven will not fit into a 30" cabinet. Very important for kitchen design. (I'm a bit disappointed that the kitchen planners at Ikea did not advise on this.) Basically, because of the width of the cabinet frame itself, you only have a 28.5 inch wide gap.
And finally, although you can buy any wall oven that will fit and put it under the cooktop (and many have done so), if the installation manual says that this wall oven is not approved for under the counter use and there is a problem your warranty will be void and if the problem should be something like the house burning down, your insurance may be void if it is proven that the wall oven caused the problem.
It is supposed to say on the cooktop box which wall ovens are approved for use with that particular cooktop. It will also say in the instruction manual for the wall oven if it is approved for under counter use and there is supposed to be a sticker on top of the oven which says if it is approved for under cooktop use.
I have an email into Ikea asking which wall ovens are approved for use under their cooktops (we have already thrown away the box).
There are two widths to consider when looking at wall ovens: the outside width (with side trim) which is usually 30", the other is the actual width of the oven which is usually 28.5" - thus fitting into a 30" base cabinet.
The recommended cut out sizes for the 30" wall ovens I have been looking at are 1/8" of an inch too big for the width of the 30" cabinet. Too risky, to pay all that money and get one that won't fit or that fits too tightly. I also have cabinets on either side of the cabinet where the wall oven will go and the overlap would come too close to the doors of the other cabinets. So we are going to install a 27" oven.

Pardon me, I should have said that despite measuring the interior width of my 30" cabinet a 100 times or more in the hope that a 30" oven will fit, the measurement I get is 28 3/8". I just don't think the 30" oven will fit without 4 big men trying to jam it in there, and I am not sure it is meant to fit that tightly against the cabinet walls.
I actually don't remember clearly if they did or not. I think I heard back from them ....but I don't remember what they said!
We ended up buying a whirlpool 27" oven. Whirlpool makes the ikea ovens/cooktops so I figured it was a good shot. I looked up the instructions and specs on the web before buying and it seemed that it would work. I think technically we might be a little too close to the bottom of the cook top but all is working well so far.
