built in book cases

Here is my dilemma:

I have a 1/2 wall that is in between the living room and a stair case going down to the entry area of the house. This 1/2 wall is about 37" high, too low for Billy bookcases since they seem to only be either 41" or 79" (and change) in height. I like that the Billys are only 11" deep though, some of the other solutions (besta & bonde are 15" deep and that seems like they might be in the way on that wall.

It's a small-ish 1 b/room apt above a 2 car garage, I bruise easily and don't want to be constantly running into the corner of an almost 16" deep book shelf, you know?

I HAVE to have built ins along this area since, due to code, I'm supposed to have an electrical outlet on the wall (can't be more than 6' in between two outlets) - I told my electrician I was going w/built ins and had planned on having them done custom, but thought I might be able to save some dough w/IKEA instead.

Or maybe I could mount 12" deep kitchen cabinets along the way w/out the doors (or glass doors possibly?) I'm looking at the Avsikt.

Any ideas are GREATLY appreciated!

Re: built in book cases

Could you cut down the billy's and use molding to hide the cuts? We're doing something similar with the Lack shelving in my office. It's still a little rough looking but as soon as it's done I'll post photos.

I'm not sure how cut-able the billys are. It's looking like I'm just going to buy some nice maple stock and have them built in, my floors will be all maple, so it'll match up nicely.

Re: built in book cases

12" deep AKURUM cabinets would work. If you don't mind the birch or white color, you can leave off the doors and just use them as bookshelves. Top them with wood or stone or colored glass, anything really. I think you are right that they would cost less than custom built-ins. The adjustable shelves of the cabinets would be a plus. You might want to price it out just for comparison with the custom quote.
Best wishes,
Gloria

I think while I'm there tomorrow I'll have a look-see at the Aksvit (sp?) style w/the glass shelves and see how I like them.

I have an open floor plan w/lidi cabs in the kitchen, will have a dark-ish granite looking countertop and the maple floors.

I'm going to have about 138" inches of these built ins at about a 30" height, leaving me a little space @ the top of the 1/2 wall (I think after my floor is in it'll be about 36" from floor to top of that wall).

Re: built in book cases

138" ... one can do (4) 30" cabinets + (1) 15" cabinet + (9) 15" doors, and 3" of fill space, or (3) 36" cabinets + (2) 15" cabinets + (6) 18" doors + (2) 15" doors, and zero fill space, but that the doors won't all be exact.

I would at least have a little gap at the bottom as not to allow even the slightest chance of the doors scratching the flooring, so essentially you're looking at a 31" height. If you do want it even with the top of the 1/2 wall, just use the Akurum legs or hang them like one would with the wall cabinets anyways.

Around here, it's not qualified as "built in" unless it's bolted into the wall, so truth be told, Billys might not qualify anyways.

I was going to bolt the billys to the wall, lol, or at least make 'em look that way :-)

I was thinking of six 18's and 2 15's maybe, not even sure I would be using doors, but I suppose that leaves gaping holes where hinges should be??
Going to go for the ones w/the tempered glass shelves probably. Can't wait to eyeball them tomorrow.

Was thinking of the 15" on either end w/the 18" in the middle, or 18-18-15-18-18-15-18-18 I'm thinking that 30 or 36" might look too large.

No gaping hinge holes. Ingeniously, the hinges attach into the shelf peg holes.

Re: built in book cases

For such a small area, I would probably just custom build. I wouldn't trust being able to cut down the Billy's cleanly. Plus I love the look of built-ins!
